a. I interviewed Ellie Yandry for this week. I choose to interview her because I thought it would interesting to get a students perspective on charity and philanthropy and see if they had a different perspective than adults. I learned that she finds charity very important and that giving to others, even when you are younger, can be a rewarding experience.

b. I thought that the speaker, Kevin, who came in for our panel discussion was very interesting. I think he shared some really interesting information with our group. I found it interesting to hear about a charity from an actual member of it instead of just hearing about it online.

Once I learned how the navigate the 990 form, it was very simple to evaluate the charity. I looked at the 990 for the American Foundation for Suicide prevention and it listed how much they eared, what their expenses were, and how much they paid each employee. I think knowing how to read a 990 for is extremely important because it enables you to determine if a charity is reputable and to see if the money they earn is going to the people in need rather than the CEO of the charity.

I think it is easy to evaluate non-profit organizations for a potential investment in their cause because the 1,2,3 scale helps determine an organization’s overall score. It is easy to tell which category they fit in, and if they’re a 3, it is clearly a quality organization to invest in. If an organization spends a majority of its money on the mission, not paying employees, it is generally ethical.

I learned it is extremely important to evaluate an investment because you don’t want your money to go to an unethical cause. You need to ask members of the organization’s board about their revenue, expenses, and purpose.

It has been extremely easy for me to find the information that is necessary to correctly judge my charity. The information that I need to find in order to consider Feed My Starving Children as a proper investment is thoroughly laid out on the website. I have learned that FMSC donates over 100,000 meals to countries that are in need of food. Its also easy to donate to the meals, it only takes  22 cents per each meal.

I think it is easy to evaluate non-profit organizations by using the rating system from the book and finding information from the 990 forms.

I have learned that evaluating an investment in a charity is important because not all of them use their funds towards the proper cause. It is important to find out how a charity is using their donations.

I think that getting a lot of information from websites before you contact the leaders and then asking the leaders of the organization important questions and questions that are going to help your research a lot is very important. There’s a lot of information to be found so it’s important to find the accurate and helpful stuff.
