Philanthropy is giving time and money to help the community. Our group’s mission is to serve our community by helping to protect the environment. The charities our group identified are I Love a Clean San Diego, Surfrider Foundation of San Diego, International Rivers, and Our City Forest. I Love a Clean San Diego educates our community to conserve and enhance our environment. The Surfrider Foundation of San Diego is an organization that protects the environment and keeps the oceans clean. They go down to the border to prevent the built up of sewage and preserve the beaches. International Rivers is an organization that constructs dams around the world to protect the water for Earth. Our City Forest takes care of, plants, and protects trees in the community. They also like to encourage others to care for the trees around them as well. Financially, The Surfrider Foundation scored a 13/15. International Rivers scored a 10/15. Our City forest scored a 12/15. We decided to donate to three charities, one per person in the group. Jamie chose to donate to Our City forest instead of International Rivers because first of all, the financial score was better, and second, the phone call was slightly better than the other organization because she found out more about Our City Forest than International Rivers. She also thinks that the work they do, taking care of and planting trees, is more helpful than building dams to protect ocean water, even though that is also very important. Amber chose to donate to the Surfrider Foundation of San Diego because they are an involved with the city of San Diego. She likes that they help educate the youth and personally knows people who worth with the Foundation. Madison chose I Love a Clean San Diego because it was a local charity that she participated in. We are all going to donate 100% of the money we each get to our organizations that we chose wisely.
12/9/14 Class
Today we discussed a little bit more about our fundraising tournament and then got back to work. We answered a couple of questions involving the charities we identified and then blogged it. I am really happy that our money is going to go towards a cause that is helping animals. That’s pretty much it!
Todays Class
Todays class wasn’t that bad but I didn’t get to do anything.

Philanthropy is the “Love of Humanity”. Our group’s mission is to fund supplies to help animals have better lives. We have identified 5 charities that were in our interests: The SD Humane Society, Project Wildlife, P.A.W.S. SD, Second Chance Dog Rescue, and The Helen Woodward Animal Center. Our team has chosen to donate 100% of our money to the SD Humane Society because their mission statement matched ours the best and they were the only organization that answered our phone call! We also looked at their 990 Tax Form from 2012 and their score was 13/15. Along with this quantitative rating, one answer we got from the question, “If you could change on thing about the organization, what would it be?” was that she would be happy if the organization went out of business. Our team really likes that answer because it shows her passion for the job that she has, which supports our mission.
Our Mission to keep it 100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Philanthropy
What is philanthropy?
Philanthropy is when you donate or invest into important causes.
What is our mission statement?
Our team’s purpose is to help the hungry people in our community.
What charities did we identify?
We found the San Diego food bank (their mission is to provide food to people and to connect to the people they serve to a range of health and human service providers), Feeding America (mission to end hunger through healthy food and education), and the Salvation Army. They all give food to the needy.
How did we rate them?
Feeding America was rated 12/15 and the San Diego food bank was 13/15. So they were both relatively good. Even though we called them and left messages they did not respond to our calls.
How much do we want to donate to them?
We would like to donate 50% of our profits to each charity

Today I finished one interview with an organization. It went well, but I didn’t get 1/2 of my questions answered because I was speaking to the wrong person. I wasn’t talking to a board member, so the person I was asking questions to didn’t know the answers to the board member questions I asked. the good part is, he said I could e-mail him so that he could forward my e-mail to someone who WOULD know the answer to my questions. In today’s class we talked more about officially confirming the tournament details with people and finishing the flyer. I still have to get donations from a store for the tournament, and I hope I can get those donations soon.
Tournament
Beliefs:
-Best to have a photo of the winners to bring recognition that prompts the people
-Recognition is as important as the extra activities and things in a tournament. This is the truth
-We need a poster of the scores, photo of winners, extra additions to the tournament details (food, prizes, etc).
